Essential Question: How does California 1 enhancement and support activities improve our work in equitably meeting the needs of all students within One System for All Students?

In moving towards One System for All Students, we must consider equity. Students come to school with diverse backgrounds, abilities, talents, and challenges. Schools ensure equity by recognizing, respecting, and acting on this diversity. A common misperception is that equity means that all students are treated equally in all situations. In fact, high-quality schools have the capacity to differentiate instruction, services, and resource distribution to respond effectively to the diverse needs of their students, with the aim of ensuring that all students benefit equally.

California 1 (CA1) activities promote equity for all students by enhancing and supporting:

General Education and Special Education work together seamlessly as one coherent system.
Site based teams monitor progress, identify interventions, and adapt instructional practices and behavioral supports to promote success for all students using evidence-based systems of inquiry.
Educational programs are organized within the context of a Multi-Tiered System of Supports framework to ensure academic and behavioral supports are provided for all students.
Instructional programs incorporate high quality, standards aligned, evidence-based practices and use the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
Programs are culturally and linguistically responsive.
Data systems are integrated to combine relevant information from state and local assessments.

Administrator / Coach: Having identified your LEA’s areas of focus to strengthen systems, review, identify, and commit to select CA1 enhancement and support activities to build equity and narrow the achievement and opportunity gaps for all underserved students. Submit the CA1 Roadmap of selected enhancement and support activities.

Classroom teachers / resource staff: Review the CA1 enhancement and support activities. Discuss:

Which CA1 enhancement and support activities are you committing to and how does it align with your identified needs?
How do you expect the CA1 enhancement and support activities will impact your practice and student outcomes?
What are some challenges you foresee in regard to your engagement in the CA1 enhancement and support activities?
What would you expect to see happening in classrooms and schools as a result of this work?
