Welcome to

Foundations of Equitable Grading

Course Description:

Grading is deeply intertwined with a wide range of facets of our education system. Our own philosophies and policies of grading are informed not only by the historical context of our education system but also our personal experiences. In this course, we will explore and examine ways to shift to more equitable grading practices that accurately communicate what students know and can do. Through a dilemma based approach, we will learn and reflect upon the foundational components of an equitable grading system. We will also explore tangible steps towards a more equitable system of grading. By the end of this course, the goal is to have the tools, resources, and supports to create a plan of action for transitioning your grading system whether it be in small steps or a complete overhaul of your grading system.

Our goals during this course are to:

- Reflect upon current grading practices and how they support/hinder student learning
- Explore equitable grading practices and how these practices impact students
- Learn and apply strategies to make grading more equitable
- Begin to build a more equitable grading system in your context

Course Logistics:

Course Runs: January 1, 2023 to May 31, 2023 June 18, 2023

Anticipated Time Commitment: 8-16 hours

Audience: TK-12 Educators, TOSAs, Instructional Coaches, and Site/District Administrators

Core Text: Grading for Equity by Joe Feldman (needs to be purchased by participant)

Due Dates: All assignments are set with a calendar due date of May 31st. Suggested due dates are provided within the description of each assignment in order to support participants with a pacing to complete the course by the end of November. Participants are welcome to work at a pace that suits their learning needs.

Course Version: Within the scope of this course, you have a choice of which version you wish to engage.

Full Course (2 Grad Unit Version)

For each module, you must complete all Module components:

M.2 - Book Exploration & Application

M.3 - Reflection & Implementation

For each module, you must complete:

Choose one task option from M.0 or M.1

One Post-reading Module Task

Choose one task option from M.2 or M.3

*For the task option you did NOT choose, you would submit the assignment with "Fast Track Option” in the text box.

Note: You can change your preference at any point during this course and please be sure let the facilitators know.

Graduate Units: This course qualifies for up to two (2) graduate-level semester units. These units are offered through University of the Pacific at a cost set by UoP ($80/unit). Upon completion of the course, participants will be provided information on how to apply for the units. The registration/grading process should take 5-8 business days after an application is received and approved by the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) team.
